Surrogacy or surrogacy is commonly known as surrogate or surrogate mother and consists of a woman becoming pregnant, but her baby legally and genetically belongs to other parents. To get to this point, no physical contact between the gestational mother and a member of the legal parents is necessary, but the gestation will occur through artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization.

Despite the fact that it is becoming a more socially accepted procedure, and that it offers the opportunity to become parents to many couples who cannot be parents by their own methods, this assisted reproduction technique is a complicated process, since it is not a legal technique in many countries and many parents go abroad in search of a mother to solve their problems when having a child.

In addition, each country that allows surrogacy has a different regulation, hence in countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Georgia or Kazakhstan only heterosexual married couples can access this type of assisted reproduction, while in the United States and Mexico they would have that possibility. Prices range from 50,000 euros in Ukraine or Mexico to 150,000 in the United States.

On the one hand, there is the traditional way in which the gestational mother provides her own ovum, which will be fertilized, through in vitro fertilization or artificial insemination, either by a sperm of the child who will be the legal father, or by that of a donor.

The other option is the gestational form. In this option, the woman who will become pregnant has no genetic link with the baby since both the ovum and the sperm are provided by the couple requesting the surrogacy. In this type of conception, conception occurs in vitro.

Apart from the classification according to the genetics of the child, surrogacy can also be divided into two types according to economic reasons, since it can be altruistic or lucrative, depending on whether the surrogate mother receives remuneration for the pregnancy or not.

In altruistic surrogacy, the legal parents will be responsible for all kinds of expenses, whether medical or legal, or any other aspect related to pregnancy, such as maternity clothing or food. On the other hand, in lucrative surrogacy, the surrogate mother receives a remuneration for the pregnancy previously agreed between the couple requesting the surrogacy and the surrogate mother.
